If-Clauses, Their Grammatical Consequents, and Their Embodied Consequence: Organizing Joint Attention in Guided Tours

In linguistics, if -clauses have attracted the interest of scholars working on syntax, typology and pragmatics alike. This article examines if- clauses as a resource available to tour guides for reorienting visitors’ visual attention towards an object interest. The data stem from 11 video-recorded tours in Italian, French, German Dutch (interpreted into Flemish Sign Language). this setting, recurrently use organize joint focus attention, by soliciting visitors bodily visually rearrange. These occur combination with verbs vision (e.g., look ), or relating movement space turn around ). Using conversation analysis interactional study pursues three interrelated objectives: 1) it grammatical relationship that speakers establish between -clause projected main clause; 2) analyzes embodied conduct participants accomplishment if/then -constructions; 3) describes resources twofold projection potential: vocal-grammatical enabling guide (or addressees) achieve grammatically adequate turn-continuation, embodied-action projection, which solicits accomplish situationally relevant action, such gaze projections do not run independently each other. shows how, while producing -clause, adjust their emerging talk—through pauses, expansions restarts—to co-occurring spatial repositioning. practices are described micro-sequential adjustments reflexively affect turn-construction compliance. addressing above phenomena questions, highlights fundamentally adaptive, situated action-sensitive nature grammar.
